Ahmedabad is the largest city in the Gujarat with the population of 55.7 lakhs. The water supply remains the ongoing issue due to the uncertain monsoons in the region of Gujarat. AMC supplies the water in the city for 2-3 hours in a day and currently is working on to provide 24 hours metred water connection. Currently the AMC supplies 1215 MLD (million litre per day) to the city with the help of its 4 water treatment plants in and around the city. In total Ahmedabad gets 1080 MLD of water through surface water sources i.e. water treatment plants and another 135 MLD of water is taken from the ground borewells. AMC Claims to supply 160 LPCD of water. But when we really zoom into the different wards and zones and compare the data of water supply with respect to the population LPCD comes out to very low in most of the cases and uneven distribution can be seen among the different regions. Such uneven distribution forces the public to look for other sources of water such as borewells. But not everyone can afford to have a borewell so they turn to the private suppliers of water for their daily needs. These suppliers and borewells owners fill the gap of supply of water in the city. These Suppliers operate at local level and are un-monitored. And thus, these suppliers exploit the natural precious source of water. These suppliers charge from 300 to 1500 depending upon the demand and the seasons, and exploits the poor people in the city.
